In two seasons as a starter at USF, Cavender had a 27-1 record for the Cougars, including a 14-0 record in 2006 as the Cougars won their second national championship in school history. Cavender passed for 3,674 yards and 38 touchdowns during the run to the championship. Cavender was named Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Offensive Player of the Year and the Victory Sports Network NAIA National Offensive Player of the Year.
He followed that campaign with 13 more consecutive victories in 2007 before USF fell in the 2007 NAIA championship game. Cavender completed 66% of his passes for 3,409 yards and 26 touchdowns. Cavender threw only nine interceptions on 379 pass attempts. Cavender was again named GPAC Offensive Player of the Year and NAIA National Offensive Player of the Year. Cavender was also named to the AFCA NAIA Coaches' All-America Team.
The 2007 season was highlighted by a 99-yard drive in the final minutes of the national semifinal game vs. Missouri Valley. On the drive, Cavender accounted for all 99 yards (78 passing, 21 rushing), including a 14-yard run on a 4th and 12 play.
Before coming to USF, Cavender played at Shasta Community College in his hometown of Redding, CA.
